Mom Hair

Hair doesn't define you. I tell myself that a lot lately ... but it's hard for me to believe, since I've had super duper long hair ever since high school. I'm trying to talk myself into going shorter.

The addiction started when people sitting in the desks behind me in school would say how pretty my hair was long. Those were the first compliments I ever remember getting about my looks while I was growing up, and boy, did they stick! Long hair = beauty, that was all there was to it. I'd found my niche.

Since then, I've had it trimmed, occasionally a couple inches shorter than what I was used to, which would make me go home and cry.

But as I get older - and especially since I've become a mother - I look around and wonder why most girls and moms my age don't grow their hair out long. Isn't long hair the ultimate statement in glamour? Carter says it's not.

Carter yanks on it every time I hold him, which, sadly makes me want to hold him less. He uses it to pull himself up and puts it in the same category as keys and remote controls - toys that aren't supposed to be toys. I solicit Matt to get him in and out of his car seat. Even pulling it back into ponytails and buns doesn't work, the weight of it pulls on my scalp and makes my head ache. Styling it feels like a waste of time when a couple tugs from the baby flatten my curls right out.

On YouTube a few weeks ago, I declared it was time to get it cut. But, for the most part, I chickened out. I love my hair. I hate it too. I sometimes wonder why I still have it this long. I've got to figure this out before he pulls the rest of it out. Or maybe I can just hang in here a few more months, and he'll eventually stop with the pulling ...

  3. Cut it!! You can get a really cute short "Mom hair" style, and donate the rest to locks of love!! I think you would look great with a new do. :)

  4. Meghann, I love your hair! I think regardless of the length; long, short or mid-length it would be gorgeous! You definitely shouldn't let your hair define you! Initially it may be hard to part with such a drastic change, but if it means you can have a closer relationship with Carter then it is definitely worth it (in my opinion). There are quite a few great organizations you can donate your hair to, which should also give you a good feeling to know that your hair is going to someone else. :) Good luck in making your decision!

  5. Meghann,
Keep you long hair, it is beautiful. Do what makes you happy. If your choice is to cut it, it will always grow back. I always say "If you are hesitant to do something then don't do it." Enjoy your long hair while your young!! All the best. :)

  6. I am 100% in the same boat- However I absolutely refuse to give in to the mom cut. I am only 24, I loooove my hair, and i just couldn't give it up ;) I just know I would regret it if I gave into the convenience.

  7. Meghann your hair in your video titled "Tigger" is much shorter but still long and I think it looks amazing, maybe you should consider that cut again. I have a 5 month old and just cut my hair to shoulder length and I am so much happier.

  8. Here is a beautiful woman who is often defined by her long hair, and when she wore a short do' it looked GREAT! Your hair (and you) will look beautiful no matter what you do.

  10. DONT CUT IT!!! I had long hair my whole life and cut it into a nice bob and its taken SO LONG for it to grow back....it made me not feel as cute and sexy....and I spent MORE time styling it than just blowdrying my long hair and throwing a few curls in it.

  11. I don't know why people call it the "Mom cut", it makes it less appealing so I do not blame you for opting out of that. I'd just get it in layers, and if you still want to cut it short, I'd do it slowly (which is how I did it before). It makes it easier to grasp the fact that "Omg my hair's short!" It's back to long again, because I missed it. Now I want to go back to short lol. Never satisfied.

  12. Don't cut it. You are right about it being glamourous! I love your hair and am growing my out long too! I just had a trim, but only because of split ends, and I almost cried when she took off only 1 inch! Keep it LONG!

  13. Long hair is definitely beautiful! I keep mine long most of the time. But short hair can still give you a spunky sexy look and feel. I always feel more feisty when I have short hair;) You will be so beautiful either way!

  14. I can't wait to see how ur new hair cut looks. I remember seeing an old pic of you in one of ur vids and you had shorter hair and I thought it looked really pretty on you. I just got mine cut about a month ago and I don't regret it for a second and I plan to keep up on the shoulder lenght style. I'm trying to talk myself into an a line style...doubt thats going to happen but i do like that style!

  16. I also have long hair, I have had long blonde hair my whole life. Well as long as I can remember. I'm 25 weeks pregnant and people ask me if I'm going to cut it, I dont think so. I love my hair too. I cut it to shoulder length about 4 years ago and I cried as soon as I did it. I told myself I'd never do it again, though one day I probably will. My fiance Matt and I are pretty active, we run and bike all the time. When we do, I just put it in a french braid which keeps it together and out of the way without hurting my scalp. You should try braiding it, maybe I'll try to make a video, I've been braiding my hair for so long and it's a great, easy and beautiful way to get it out of the way. I've just started a blog and my address is: http://lindsayalexahodge.blogspot.com/ if you'd like to meet us, I'm also on facebook and so is Matt :).
