day 1: what age do you miss the most?

I have a x-month old and already I'm thinking, I'm going to miss him at this age. Have you felt that way, and what age do you miss the most?

There are so many moments. But you only get one of each.
I vividly remember staring at Carter a few times in his infancy, forcing myself to memorize his face as it was in that moment, because I knew it would be gone the next day. Or the next hour. Or minute. In my chest, they felt like panicky, desperate, sad efforts to hold onto the way he was. I remember the positions I was situated in with him, staring. But the picture of his face? Gone.

Today, I can't remember the last time I had a stare-and-memorize moment.

If going backwards in time were an option, I'd like to go back to his newborn stage for a few days ... err ... without the plummeting, post-preggo hormones and the whole figuring out breastfeeding puzzle.

Partly because I'm not blind to how to take care of an infant anymore, but also because I LOVED him at that size; being able to snuggle up with him in bed, smell him and kiss him without him hitting me and telling me NO! then running away (it's okay, you can laugh). It's not exactly that I don't love seeing him growing into his individualism and having a strong personality ... but it's a heavenly experience reveling in a tiny being that's so innocent, he doesn't know how to do anything but wiggle and love. Without my newborn Carter, I doubt I would have ever known that were possible.

And also? There's something really sexy about a man holding a newborn. I'd like to sit back and watch that again.

I know that the older he gets and less bobbling he does, the less cute he's going to be. He won't get stared at as much by strangers in stores, he won't rely on me for his every waking need. This growing thing happens to be a daily occurrence for us. Today, for example, it was unseasonably warm outside so I took him to a park (which happens to be in one of the neighborhoods we're considering building a house, note how pretty those houses are in the background!)

He was sliding down slides by himself. I don't even know who this baby is.

  1. I wish I could say that it gets easier to watch them grow up, but it doesn't. :( Just the other day H said, "Get away from me, mommy!" I cried. It was a pretty awful 5 minutes! But the "I'm sorry, Mommy, I love you!" after made everything better. Plus, as he gets older, it makes room for another! Maybe in that new house (that I know will be gorgeous) of yours! ;)

  2. These pictures are beautiful and capture him so well. It is crazy how fast it all goes. He is such a big boy to slide all by himself!!

  3. I feel the same way about my husband. We have been together for eight years so I knew everything about him. But, it was truly amazing seeing him interact with our child. I love watching them play together.

  7. Infancy is a stage that I miss too. It's hard to believe that my 1-year-old used to be so tiny.

PS: Love the pictures and the homes in the background!
