I want Carter to turn out - I dunno - perfect?

A huge part of being a new mom is choosing which advice you're going take and to weave into your priorities. Put them to sleep on their backs. Have a ceiling fan on over the crib. Sanitize surfaces. Read books. Avoid TV. Try not to give them medications. Buy organic products.

Lovely advice, but nobody ever offers the second half of their sentence. You know, that because part. Please, people of harping, tell me what happens if I faux pas it up?

At risk of sounding completely naive - honestly, the organic thing didn't have me sold. I don't eat/wear/live organic, and look at me, I'm doing just fine. Won't Carter be just as fine?

But it's organic! Yes, nature-person, it is. Please pass the cheap cheerios.

There was a lot I didn't know.

From the second they're conceived until age three, babies' brains and bodies grow super fast. Obviously. Since they're so small, they absorb more pesticides per pound of body weight than adults do. The toxins stay in their systems longer and have an impact on their growth.

Toxins can play into so many different products - plastic bottles, toys, soaps, food, milk and clothes.

I get the food and bottles part, we slop them to our mouths and practically inject toxins into our bloodstreams. (If you're Carter, you're also into avid soap consumption.) But clothes? Paranoid much? How could non-organic clothes really hurt anyone?

Our bodies actually absorb what touches our skin, and guess what? A baby's skin is a lot thinner than ours.

Cotton crops are a crazy toxin offender; they're heavily ridden with insecticides that cause cancer. To put it more simply scarily: A study found that children whose parents used pesticides in their personal gardens were seven times more likely to have leukemia than other children.

Let's finish that blank-slated sentence. Opt organic because Carter will be at a lower risk for cancer, disease and his flawless growth won't be stunted. --- Well ok then.

Now that I'm feeling a little less blonde and fairly freaked out, I give. I'll opt for some safe, scratchy, earthy, organic clothing. But I couldn't believe my fingers when Carter got his first two organic T-shirts the other day from My Natural Baby Boutique. The organic cotton is surprisingly so much softer and thicker than any shirt I've ever come across.

Holding Carter felt like grabbing a brand new, snuggly teddy bear right off a toy store shelf. And it figures. Organic cotton is treated less, so the fibers aren't weak and broken down.

  1. YAY! This is so fantastic! I love organic. The minute I found out that I was pregnant I ate only organic, cut coffee out, and ate as healthy as I could. Its only natural that I continue now that my little man is four months old right?! So far Max eats only organic too... he is a breast man! I never really thought of clothing him in organic, but HELLO that makes total sense!!!
So I went to My Natural Baby fb page and "liked". I also went to their website and umm lets just say I cant pick just one item that I would love to see my Maxwell wearing!

  2. Hey girl - I'd love to have some sources for that information you shared! Those would be great studies and articles for me to share with my attending physicians and/or parents of pedi patients who were interested.

  4. Wow...I try and buy local veggies and if I cant get local I buy organic but clothing? I'd never given it a second thought..until now!and it totally makes sense!Crazy!
I think I would have to get one of those T-Shirts because well..the whole clothing thing..or maybe I'd get a toy..but does he need more toys?hehe..I think it would be a toss up between the shirt or a Wetbag for cloth diapers. I looooooove my cloth diapers..and having a organic fancy wetbag would just make me the talk of my girlfriends...and then they would HAVE to get one too.. :) but maybe i could just get both..humm

  9. Ahhh Meghann I am torn! Would I love to give my son the best start in life by giving him organic food and clothes? Hell yeah, i'd love to. The idea that doing anything else could be damaging to his health strikes fear into my very core!
Thing is, it's all about the money for us as much as I hate to admit it. We're not poor by any means, but on one wage and watching our spending....well, to keep a roof over his head I suppose! Organic stuff in the UK is very expensive so it's on the list of wants rather than needs.
Whilst I fully appreciate your thoughts and findings,(thank you for posting btw) I think I am going to have to continue with the (risky) business of dressing my son in non-organic fibres.
I do take a little comfort, however, in the fact that I'm doing my bit to help preserve the world my son will grow up in. I do this by dressing him in clothes handed down from my 3 yr old nephew, rather than going out and buying new!

Love the post. Keep up the good work!! xxx

  15. I've always wondered about going all organic or not. My husband is a little too cheap to go au'natural just yet! I want to try to do more of it though this time around. With bottles/food/diapers. So thanks for posting this so I can understand a little better why its so important :) I liked and post on your FB, and if I were to win your give-away I would like to get my little one:

    BPA Free thinkbaby Starter Set
    ~or~
The swaddle blankies--probably the espresso one :) so it can go either way! (we are keeping the sex a secret 'till birth)

  47. definitely agree that organic is important - my little man's wardrobe is made up of over 50% organic cotton clothing, all of his blankets/linens are organic cotton and even his mattress is usda certified organic! We also opted out of any plastic which drove everyone nuts around the time of our baby shower!

I would love to win the giveaway. I think the tees are super cute but I'd also be interested in one of the slings they have on the site!

  48. The organic econuts laundry soap looks great. Their slings are gorgeous. The clothes are adorable. -- a very tough choice.
