marmalade skies

When we moved here back in November, I joined a Mommy Meetup group so I could meet other moms with babies. It's an online group (on meetup.com) for moms needing playdates and friends for their babies/toddlers ... and themselves.

I've gone to a few of the outings so far - a lunch at Chick-fil-a, a mall playground, a Christmas tree lighting; unfortunately no real love connection has been made for little Carter and me yet. The group has helped me get familiar with cool places to take kids around here, though.

The other day we went to Marmalade Skies. The cashier's eyes got wide when twenty moms and their kids crammed into his little yogurt shop. I guess nobody warned him about the stampede.

The setup was cool, you grab a cup and dispense your own yogurt, pile on as many toppings as you want - cereals, cookies, berries, candies, marshmallow goops, fudges and syrups. Then you take the cup to the cashier, he weighs it and charges you appropriately.

Since Carter isn't around kids all that much, I have to get to know him all over again in these types of settings. Instead of destroying his surroundings, he holds onto my leg and wants to sit on my lap and stare. Or he'll just stand there.

We found a spot beside a giant chalkboard to eat our yogurt.

Sorry about the fuzzy pictures. I didn't bring my good camera. I kinda got stared at funny for even whipping out my little camera, so no artsy photos today.

  2. That sucks you haven't gotten a super warm welcome. We kinda live in the boon docks so there are zero cool places to go. I wish makings new friends now was as easy as it was in kindergarten, when all you had to do was share yout cookies

  3. We go to a Mommy Meetup Group too. Bean is the same way- and I'm learning, that new moms joining a meetup group seem to be looked at like aliens until you are "accepted" lol we have a cool yogurt place too. :)

  4. @Shannon i know what you mean. it seems like the conversations only get as far as "how old is yours, and what's his/her name?" It gets really frustrating! Maybe I'll bring some cookies to share haha :)

  5. I've been looking for a mommy meet-up group around my area, but unfortunately haven't found much yet. It would be perfect if all of the mommies in the blogsphere lived near each other, at least we all know a little bit about each other & the kiddos.<> I hope that you find a group that you click with soon =)

  7. @Victoria @ The Sweetest Serendipity! it's so interesting to me how he doesn't act like himself! i'll admit, i've stared at some of the newer ones like aliens too, but mostly just to figure out if there's a possibility that they'll be my friend :) my group his HUGE, there are about a hundred ppl in it, although only 10-15 show up for meetups

  8. We have a fro-yo place jsut like that here in Denver called Menchies. I dream about it when I'm not there, with my crazy pregnancy cravings leading the way these days. Getting over the formal stuff in meetup groups can be hard, but I'm sure you'll find a connection soon. Another good way is to go to library reading groups for kids. When I was a nanny I met all kinds of wonderful parents there.

  9. @K.S.P.A. ah thanks for the library idea! i can't imagine being patient for a book reading, but i'll never know if i don't try!
the frozen yogurt at this place was all gluten and fat free, so it tasted kinda bad, but the toppings made up for it :)

  11. Hi! I started following along because my son is named Carter too! I am part of a group that met online through BabyCenter- you might have some luck that way through message boards, etc. I even met one of my closest mommy friends in the parking lot of Babies R Us when our sons were about 8 weeks old! You never know who you'll click with!

  12. @Kelly i've never heard of BabyCenter, thanks for the tip!
Babies r us parking lot! What a great way to meet a close friend!

  13. I am planning on purchasing a professional camera to be able to take better pictures of baby Andres, and I was wondering, which camera you use, and if you don't mind telling me, how much you approximately paid for it. I would appreciate the info. Thank you!

  14. @Meghann It's a pretty neat story and the best part is that our boys are only two weeks apart. We happened to be parked next to each other in front of the store and thankfully she struck up a conversation!

  15. @Elibeth i got mine as a christmas gift from my husband 2 or 3 years ago, he does tons of research before he buys things, he picked it out himself. I knew nothing about cameras except that i wanted a high quality one. it's a Nikon D40, i think he paid approx $800 for an entire kit. Good cameras are no joke! It's been worth it, I take hundreds of pictures

  16. I don't have kids, but I just wanted to tell you, my dog acts like Carter when we take him to the dog park. He will run around with the other dogs for 5 minutes and then come stand next to us for a while. Then he runs around again for a little bit. I don't think he really enjoys going, but it is good for him to be around other dogs.

    That yogurt place sounds cool.

  17. Hey Meghann,
I haven't seen your blog in awhile and I used to watch you on youtube a lot (my channel name is lizzy32984, but I have stopped making videos), but I saw this and noticed you live near Charlotte. You can always try Charlottemommies.com for some great mommies to meet. I am actually on there and that is where I made the majority of my friends. You just sign on and pick an area forum that you want to be on and they host various events. It is a great site! If your interested, and need any help in figuring it out, just let me know!

  18. @LizHi Liz!
Do you live near Charlotte? If so, I"m jealous! I went to college there (UNCC) & always wanted to live there! We actually live around the RDU triangle though. I'm listening to one of your videos right now & you're talking about having your hair cut in Cary, is this the same Cary near Raleigh? Did you drive from Charlotte to Cary to get your hair done?

  19. @Anonymous very funny how dogs go through that kind of anxiety too! yeah it was a cool place, but the yogurt was all fat free so it didn't taste nearly as good as the toppings. kinda weird to have such indulgent toppings go along with that type of yogurt :)

  20. @Meghann
Yes, I live in Charlotte! My parents live in Cary (yes, near Raleigh) You have an amazing group of youtube mommies out that way! (aacosta26 and edhill and of course I am there every month :P) Cary is a suburb of Raleigh and has an AMAZING school district. We are hoping to move there when Ajay is a little older. You might want to check out trianglemommies.com (it isn't as good as charlottemommies...I know because I am on both because I am there so much :P) but it definitely will give you some info about the area and events are set up by age group. Let me know if you need any help with anything! The hair place is called KORMA...I either get a really great hair cut there or a really sucky one depending on who cuts, but actually has really great reviews on google!

  22. @Elisabeth Hi Liz! We're in the Morrisville/Cary area also, it's so pretty. It's so nice to talk to someone who knows the area :)
